Traditional Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing on the Thames in Caversham
Pull together as a crew in a traditional Cornish pilot gig, where rhythm, endurance and teamwork carry teenagers along the River Thames with Neptune Explorer Sea Scouts.
The Cornish pilot gig is a classic wooden rowing boat crewed by six rowers and a cox, each pulling a single oar in time with the others. At Neptune, teenagers learn the rowing stroke from the catch through the drive to the recovery, then the harder art of matching that rhythm exactly to their crewmates so the gig moves smoothly and powerfully. It is heritage rowing with real maritime character on the Thames at Caversham.
Gig rowing builds genuine fitness, endurance and timing, and there is no experience needed to begin. The cox steers and calls the rhythm while rowers focus on technique, so beginners are supported from their first outing. Buoyancy aids and all equipment are provided, and every session is led by DBS-checked, qualified volunteer instructors to Scout Association safeguarding standards, with safety cover always on the water.
Gig rowing suits teenagers who love being part of a tight crew and enjoy a physical challenge with a strong sense of tradition and teamwork. The shared effort builds firm friendships, and we welcome young people from Reading, Caversham and the wider Berkshire area to our base at Wychotes, The Warren. We meet on Thursday evenings, 19:30 to 21:30, and the first two weeks are free before membership is £22 a month.
