Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) for Teenagers in Reading & Caversham
Stand-up paddleboarding gets teenagers up on the water and exploring the calm reaches of the Thames at Caversham, building balance and confidence with Neptune Explorer Sea Scouts.
Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, has a teenager standing on a buoyant board and propelling it with a long single-bladed paddle. At Neptune, young people start kneeling to find their balance, then rise to their feet and learn the strokes that steer, turn and accelerate the board. It is a genuinely accessible way onto the Thames and a great workout for core strength, balance and posture without ever feeling like a chore.
SUP at Neptune follows the British Canoeing Paddle Power and Paddle Start, Discover and Explore framework so progress is recognised and structured. No experience is needed and the learning curve is friendly. Boards, paddles, buoyancy aids and wetsuits are all provided, and the calm Caversham water is ideal for first-timers. Every session is supervised by DBS-checked, qualified volunteer instructors under full Scout Association safeguarding standards.
Paddleboarding suits teenagers who like a calmer, exploratory pace and the chance to find their own rhythm on the river, as well as those building towards the more dynamic disciplines. Families come to us from Reading, Caversham and the surrounding Berkshire area, meeting at Wychotes on The Warren each Thursday evening from 19:30 to 21:30. The first two weeks are free, then membership is £22 a month.
