Dragon boat racing on the River Thames in Reading

Dragon Boating for Teenagers on the Thames in Reading & Caversham

Loud, fast and powered by teamwork, dragon boating sees a whole crew paddle in time to a beating drum along the Thames at Caversham with Neptune Explorer Sea Scouts.

Dragon boating packs a crew of around ten to twenty paddlers into one long, decorated boat, all driving forward together to the rhythm of a drummer at the bow. At Neptune, teenagers learn the synchronised stroke that makes a dragon boat fly, how to time their catch and reach to the person in front, and how the helm steers the boat. When a whole crew clicks into one rhythm, the speed is genuinely exhilarating.

It is one of the most welcoming ways into paddlesport because the boat is large, stable and crewed, so newcomers feel supported from the first stroke. No experience is needed. Paddles, buoyancy aids and wetsuits where required are all provided, and our DBS-checked volunteer instructors coach every session to Scout Association safeguarding standards, with safety cover always present on the water.

Dragon boating is perfect for teenagers who thrive on energy, teamwork and a bit of friendly competition, with the chance to build towards racing. As a crew sport it builds real camaraderie, and we welcome young people from Reading, Caversham and across Berkshire to our base at Wychotes, The Warren. We meet on Thursday evenings, 19:30 to 21:30, and the first two weeks are completely free before membership is £22 a month.

Dragon Boating — FAQ

Does my teenager need to be strong or sporty for dragon boating?
No. Dragon boating is a team effort where technique and timing matter more than raw strength, so it suits a wide range of teenagers. Our instructors coach everyone from scratch, and the first two weeks are free to try.
How many people are in a dragon boat?
A dragon boat typically carries around ten to twenty paddlers plus a drummer and a helm. Being part of a big, supportive crew is exactly what makes it such a confidence-building first paddle for newcomers.
